We help urban communities in low-income settlements to build a sustainable future for themselves
We work together with local communities in urban settlements to plan and implement initiatives that aim at addressing the wicked problems. Our first projects are in Tanzania and deal with water, sanitation and agriculture.
Our solutions involve and will always involve a sustainable business aspect. By bringing in entrepreneurship we want to ensure local ownership and make a long term impact.
Improving sanitation by building community capabilities in urban settlements of Tanzania
The project aimed at improving the sanitary situation of people living in informal settlements of Dar es Salaam where around 80% of the population lack proper sanitation and water services. Living in these informal settlements people do not have resources to improve their living conditions.
The project team introduced ecological sanitation technologies and composting methods to the local community and trained them on construction, maintenance and operation of ecosan toilets. With the support of the project local communities built as many as 38 ecosan toilets for low-income families in three informal settlements around Dar es Salaam.
“This project has helped the community. At the beggining, it helped the youth of Keko Machungwa who were in drugs, by giving them life alternatives. Youth learned construction skills and benefitted from one dry toilet that served as a pilot of the dry toilet technology and as an example for the whole community” says Husna Seif Sechonge, leader of the Feferation of Urban Poor and resident of Keko Machungwa.
The project built the grounds for the establishment of a local social enterprise run by local communities to produce fertilizers and soil amendments harvested from ecosan toilets. Members of the project with business knowledge educated and adviced the local community on basic business skills and principles of sustainable economies.
A social enterprise to generate more resources for the local community
The goal of this project is to ensure expansion of business and additional resources to build more sanitation facilities to low income population. The project is developing a sustainable business model focused on ecological farming and sanitation.
